I am a violist foremost and teach mainly the violin, but over the last 25 years of music performance and teaching I have also learned the cello, piano, guitar and ukulele. I enjoy playing in groups and have had the privilege to play with several wonderful groups in the last decade such as the The Kingsville Symphony Orchestra, Corpus Christi Symphony, Victoria Symphony, Symphony Viva, and the Lone Star Philharmonic. One of my favorite ensembles to perform with is a quartet, and I have been performing with The Adagio String Quartet since college and have played for hundreds of events ranging from birthdays, anniversaries, and parties, to funerals, weddings, and engagements. I also collect coins and stamps, have been skateboarding almost as long as I have been playing music, and I have 2 kitties.
My Methodology
I like getting to know new students and their interests outside of music. That gives me a good idea of what kind of music to aim for and how to go about it. Having fun is what keeps students interested and keeps them practicing, so I am always aiming to make them smile and laugh at least once a lesson. For beginners I start with Essential Elements book 1 which teaches basic notes and rhythms, parts of the instrument, and proper posture and playing positions. In addition, I use Suzuki as a way to begin memorizing music and using your ear to understand the relationship of making music to the physical act of making sound. This combination has worked great for many and once the basics are learned I figure out with each student a piece of music of their choosing to learn. That is where playing viola, violin, piano or any other instrument really gets fun! Several students are currently learning fiddle tunes right now and are having a blast.
